Formula
Visitors Needed = Target Orders ÷ (Conversion Rate ÷ 100)
Industry Benchmark
If your CVR is 2% and you want 100 orders, you need 5,000 visitors. At $2 CPC, that's $10K in ad spend — make sure your CPA supports it.
How much traffic do you need to hit your sales target?
One of the most common questions in dropshipping is: How much traffic do I need to make $10K/month? The answer is simple math — but most dropshippers never calculate it and end up spending randomly on ads without knowing if the traffic volume can realistically produce their target sales. This guide explains the traffic formula, walks through worked examples, and shows how to use the calculator to set realistic goals.
The traffic formula
Visitors Needed = Target Orders ÷ (Conversion Rate ÷ 100)
Target Revenue = Target Orders × AOV
Implied Ad Spend = Visitors Needed × CPC (if paid traffic)
The formula is simple: divide your target orders by your conversion rate to get the traffic you need. If you want 100 orders and your CVR is 2%, you need 5,000 visitors. If your CVR is 1%, you need 10,000 visitors. Your conversion rate is the single biggest determinant of how much traffic you need — which is why improving CVR is often more impactful than buying more traffic.
Worked example: 100 orders at 2% CVR
Target Orders: 100. Conversion Rate: 2%. Visitors Needed = 100 ÷ 0.02 = 5,000 visitors. AOV: $58. Target Revenue = 100 × $58 = $5,800. At $2 CPC, ad spend = 5,000 × $2 = $10,000. Implied CPA = $10,000 ÷ 100 = $100 per order. If your max affordable CPA is $25 (typical for a $40 product with 60% margin), you cannot profitably acquire 100 orders via paid traffic at $2 CPC and 2% CVR. Your CPA ($100) would be 4x your max ($25).
Traffic benchmarks by channel (2026)
Facebook Ads: $1.50-$3.00 CPC, 1-2.5% CVR, $60-$300 implied CPA. Google Search (non-brand): $1.00-$3.00 CPC, 1.5-3% CVR, $33-$200 implied CPA. TikTok Ads: $0.80-$2.00 CPC, 0.8-2% CVR, $40-$250 implied CPA. Pinterest Ads: $0.50-$1.50 CPC, 1-2% CVR, $25-$150 implied CPA. Email/SMS: $0 CPC (owned), 3-5% CVR, $0 CPA (sunk cost). Organic (SEO/social): $0 CPC, 2-4% CVR, $0 CPA (time investment). Email and organic traffic have $0 CPA because you don't pay per click — you've already invested in building the audience. This is why building an email list and organic presence dramatically reduces the traffic you need to buy.
How to reduce the traffic you need
There are two ways to hit a sales target: (1) buy more traffic, or (2) improve the traffic you have. The second is almost always cheaper and more sustainable. Improve conversion rate — Going from 1.5% to 3% CVR halves the traffic you need for the same sales. Focus on page speed, product photos, trust signals, and checkout simplification. Increase AOV — Higher AOV means fewer orders needed for the same revenue. If your AOV is $40 and you want $4,000/month, you need 100 orders. If you push AOV to $80 with bundles, you need only 50 orders — half the traffic. Build an email list — Email traffic converts at 3-5% (vs 1-2% for cold ads). Once you have 5,000+ subscribers, email can drive 20-30% of revenue at near-zero CPA. Leverage organic content — TikTok organic, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts. Zero ad cost, but requires consistent content investment. Use retargeting — Retargeting CVR is 2-3x cold-traffic CVR.
The traffic reality check
Most new dropshippers dramatically underestimate how much traffic they need. For a $5,000/month target: At 1% CVR and $40 AOV, you need 12,500 visitors and $25,000 ad budget. At 2% CVR and $40 AOV, you need 6,250 visitors and $12,500 ad budget. At 2% CVR and $60 AOV, you need 4,167 visitors and $8,333 ad budget. At 3% CVR and $80 AOV, you need 2,083 visitors and $4,167 ad budget. Improving CVR from 1% to 3% and AOV from $40 to $80 reduces the required ad budget from $25,000 to $4,167 — an 83% reduction. This is why CVR and AOV optimization is more impactful than buying more traffic.
Common traffic calculation mistakes
The most common mistake is using unrealistic CVR assumptions. New dropshippers often assume 5% CVR because they saw a YouTube video claiming it. Real dropshipping CVR on cold Facebook traffic is typically 1-2%. Use conservative CVR assumptions in your traffic calculations — if the math works at 1.5% CVR, it'll work even better if you hit 3%. The second mistake is not accounting for mobile vs desktop CVR — mobile traffic converts at 50-70% of desktop rate. If 70% of your traffic is mobile (typical for Facebook/TikTok ads), your blended CVR will be closer to your mobile CVR. The third mistake is forgetting to account for returns — if you need 100 orders to hit your revenue target but your return rate is 10%, you actually need 111 orders to net 100 after returns.
