Formula
Conversion Rate % = (Orders ÷ Visitors) × 100
Industry Benchmark
Average e-commerce conversion rate: 1.58% (IRP Commerce). Shopify stores: 1–3% average, 5–7%+ best-in-class. Mobile typically converts at 50–70% of desktop rate.
What is e-commerce conversion rate and why it is the master metric
Conversion rate (CVR) is the percentage of your website visitors who complete a purchase. If 100 people visit your store and 2 buy, your conversion rate is 2%. CVR is often called the master metric of e-commerce because it affects every other number: revenue, ROAS, CAC, LTV, and ultimately profitability. A store with 1% CVR needs 2x the traffic of a store with 2% CVR to generate the same revenue — which means 2x the ad spend, 2x the CAC, and half the ROAS.
The average e-commerce conversion rate in 2026 is 1.58% (IRP Commerce). But this average masks enormous variation by industry, device, traffic source, and price point. This guide breaks down the 2026 benchmarks so you know whether your store is underperforming or winning, and gives you the 7 levers to improve CVR.
The conversion rate formula
Conversion Rate % = (Number of Orders ÷ Total Visitors) × 100
The formula is simple, but getting the inputs right matters. Number of Orders should be completed purchases, not add-to-carts or checkouts initiated. Total Visitors should be unique visitors (not sessions), and should exclude bots (use Google Analytics 4 which filters known bots). If you use sessions instead of visitors, your CVR will appear lower because one visitor can have multiple sessions.
Worked example: 47 orders from 3,000 visitors
Over 30 days, your store gets 3,000 unique visitors and 47 orders. CVR = (47 ÷ 3,000) × 100 = 1.57% — right at the e-commerce average. If your AOV is $58, your revenue is 47 × $58 = $2,726. To double revenue to $5,452, you can either double traffic (to 6,000 visitors) or double CVR (to 3.14%). Doubling CVR is almost always cheaper than doubling traffic, because traffic costs ad spend while CVR improvements are mostly one-time investments in page speed, design, and trust signals.
Conversion rate by industry (2026 benchmarks)
IRP Commerce publishes monthly CVR benchmarks. Food and Drink: 2.93% avg, 5.5%+ top 10%. Multi-brand retailers: 2.30% avg, 4.5%+ top 10%. Home and Garden: 1.98% avg, 4.0%+ top 10%. Pet Care: 1.85% avg, 3.8%+ top 10%. Fashion and Apparel: 1.78% avg, 3.5%+ top 10%. Beauty and Skincare: 1.75% avg, 3.5%+ top 10%. Electronics: 1.45% avg, 2.8%+ top 10%. Auto Parts: 1.10% avg, 2.2%+ top 10%. If your store is below the average for your industry, focus on conversion rate optimization before scaling ads.
Conversion rate by device
Mobile traffic typically converts at 50-70% of desktop rate. Desktop CVR: 2.5% average. Mobile CVR: 1.5% average (60% of desktop). Tablet CVR: 2.0% average (80% of desktop). Since 65%+ of e-commerce traffic is mobile, your blended CVR is heavily weighted by mobile performance. If your mobile CVR is below 1.5%, your mobile experience is the bottleneck — not your traffic source or product.
Conversion rate by traffic source
Email/SMS: 3-5% CVR (warm audience, high intent). Direct traffic: 2.5-4% (brand-aware visitors). Google Search brand: 3-5% (highest intent). Google Search non-brand: 1.5-3% (active research intent). Facebook/Instagram Ads: 1-2.5% (interrupt-driven). TikTok Ads: 0.8-2% (lower intent, viral upside). Pinterest Ads: 1-2% (planning mindset, visual products). Display/YouTube Ads: 0.3-1% (brand awareness, low intent). Email and SMS convert at 2-3x the rate of cold paid traffic — this is why building an email list is the highest-ROI activity in e-commerce.
How to improve your store's conversion rate
- Improve page speed — Going from 6s to 2s load time typically lifts CVR 15-25%. Use WebP images, lazy loading, and a fast theme.
- Add trust signals — Reviews, badges, guarantees, contact info. Stores with 50+ reviews convert 30% better than stores with 0.
- Improve product photos — 6+ high-quality images, including lifestyle shots. Stores with video convert 40% better.
- Simplify checkout — Shopify's accelerated checkout (Shop Pay, Apple Pay) lifts CVR 20-30% by reducing friction.
- Offer free shipping — 62% of shoppers expect free delivery. Bake shipping cost into product price.
- Use urgency carefully — Only 3 left or Sale ends in 2 hours works, but use sparingly. Fake urgency hurts trust.
- Mobile-optimize — 65% of traffic is mobile. Test your store on a $200 Android phone, not just your iPhone.
A store stuck at 1% CVR can usually be pushed to 2.5%+ by working levers 1, 2, 3, and 4 together. This doubles your revenue from the same ad spend — without changing your ads at all.
Common conversion rate mistakes
The most common mistake is comparing your CVR to the global average without accounting for your industry, device mix, and traffic source. A 1% CVR might be terrible for a $20 product on email traffic but excellent for a $500 product on cold Facebook traffic. Always benchmark against your specific industry and channel. The second mistake is optimizing CVR before you have enough traffic — if you get 200 visitors/month, your CVR swings wildly based on 1-2 extra orders. Wait until you have 1,000+ visitors/month before drawing conclusions.
