The 12 metrics that actually matter for dropshipping

Most dropshippers track 30 metrics and understand none of them. Shopify Analytics, Google Analytics, Facebook Ads Manager, and Klaviyo all dump hundreds of metrics on you — but only 12 actually determine whether your store is profitable. This guide identifies those 12 metrics, explains what they mean, and shows you how to set up dashboards to track them automatically.

How to set up a dropshipping analytics dashboard

You don't need a $100/month tool to track these metrics. Here's a free dashboard setup:

  1. Google Sheet: create a spreadsheet with these 12 metrics as rows and dates as columns. Update weekly.
  2. Google Analytics 4: free. Tracks traffic, CVR, AOV, revenue by channel. Install on your Shopify store.
  3. Google Search Console: free. Tracks organic search rankings, clicks, and impressions.
  4. Facebook Ads Manager: free. Tracks ROAS, CPA, CTR, CPM for Facebook/Instagram ads.
  5. Shopify Analytics: included with Shopify. Tracks revenue, orders, AOV, CVR, return rate.
  6. Klaviyo: free up to 250 contacts. Tracks email revenue, open rates, click rates.

Update your Google Sheet every Monday with the previous week's data. Review trends weekly and take action on any metric that's moving in the wrong direction.

Weekly analytics review checklist

Every Monday, spend 30 minutes reviewing these metrics:

  • Revenue vs. previous week: growing or declining? Why?
  • Net profit margin: above 15%? If not, investigate costs.
  • ROAS vs. BEROAS: above BEROAS + 25%? If not, optimize or kill campaigns.
  • CPA vs. max CPA: below max? If not, improve creative or targeting.
  • CVR: above 1.5%? If not, improve product page speed, photos, reviews.
  • AOV: stable or growing? If declining, add bundles or upsells.
  • Return rate: below 8%? If not, investigate product quality or descriptions.
  • Top-selling product: still profitable? Check BEROAS and ad performance.
  • Email revenue: 20%+ of total revenue? If not, improve email flows.
  • Organic traffic: growing? If yes, invest more in SEO/content.

This 30-minute weekly review will catch problems before they become disasters. Most failed dropshipping stores could have been saved if the owner had tracked metrics and acted on the data.

Monthly analytics deep dive

Once a month, do a deeper review (1-2 hours):

  • Customer cohort analysis: how do customers from month 1 compare to month 3 in terms of LTV?
  • Product performance: which products generate the most profit (not revenue)?
  • Channel performance: which traffic channels drive the most profitable customers?
  • Seasonal trends: is revenue cyclical? Plan inventory and ad spend accordingly.
  • Competitor benchmarking: how do your metrics compare to industry averages?
