Formula

CPA = Ad Spend ÷ Conversions

Industry Benchmark

Facebook all-industry CPA averages ~$18.68 (WordStream). Dropshipping CPAs range $15–60+ depending on niche and price point. Compare CPA to (Selling Price − Non-Ad Costs) to know if scalable.

What is Cost Per Acquisition and how it differs from CAC

Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) is the amount you pay to acquire one converted customer from your advertising. It is calculated by dividing total ad spend by the number of conversions. CPA is closely related to Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), but the two are not identical: CPA is an ad-platform metric (just ad spend ÷ conversions), while CAC is a business metric (all marketing costs ÷ new customers, including creative, agency, and tool costs).

For day-to-day ad campaign management, CPA is the metric you'll watch most closely. It tells you whether a specific campaign, ad set, or creative is profitable. If your CPA is below your max affordable CPA (selling price minus non-ad costs), the campaign is profitable. If above, it's losing money. This guide explains how to calculate CPA, the 2026 benchmarks, and how to use CPA for kill/scale decisions.

The CPA formula

CPA = Total Ad Spend ÷ Number of Conversions
Max Affordable CPA = Selling Price − Non-Ad Costs

Total Ad Spend is the amount spent on the ad platform for the campaign you're analyzing. Number of Conversions is the number of purchases attributed to that campaign by the platform's attribution window. Max Affordable CPA is the most you can spend to acquire one order and still break even — it equals your gross profit per order before ad spend.

Worked example: $500 ad spend, 15 conversions

Total Ad Spend: $500. Conversions: 15. CPA = $500 ÷ 15 = $33.33 per conversion. Is this CPA good? It depends on your max affordable CPA. If you sell a $39.99 product with $14.91 in non-ad costs, your max affordable CPA is $25.08. Your actual CPA of $33.33 exceeds your max — meaning you are losing $8.25 per order. Kill the campaign or fix the creative. If your max affordable CPA is $50 (higher-margin product), your actual CPA of $33.33 is well below max — you are profitable with $16.67 in ad profit per order. Scale the campaign.

CPA benchmarks by platform (2026)

Facebook/Instagram: $18-$45 avg CPA, $10-$20 top 25%. Google Search: $25-$60 avg, $15-$30 top 25%. TikTok: $20-$50 avg, $12-$25 top 25%. Pinterest: $15-$35 avg, $8-$18 top 25%. YouTube: $25-$55 avg, $15-$30 top 25%. Facebook all-industry CPA averages $18.68 (WordStream). Dropshipping CPAs range $15-$60+ depending on niche and price point. Beauty and home decor tend to have lower CPAs (visual products convert well); tech and B2B-adjacent have higher CPAs.

CPA vs CAC vs Max CPA — when to use each

CPA (platform-reported) = Ad Spend ÷ Conversions, best for campaign-level optimization. CAC (full-stack) = All Marketing Costs ÷ New Customers, best for business-level unit economics. Max Affordable CPA = Price − Non-Ad Costs, best for kill/scale threshold. Target CPA = Max CPA × 0.7 (30% margin buffer), best for scaling goal. Most professional dropshippers track all four. CPA for ad platform decisions, CAC for business-level analysis, Max CPA for the kill/scale threshold, and Target CPA for scaling goals.

How to lower your CPA

  1. Improve ad creative — Creative is 70-80% of ad performance. Better CTR = lower CPC = lower CPA. Test 5-10 new creatives per week.
  2. Improve landing page conversion — Same ad clicks, more conversions = lower CPA. Every 0.5% CVR improvement typically reduces CPA by 20-25%.
  3. Tighten audience targeting — Broad works on Facebook, but narrower interest stacks work better on TikTok and Google. Reduce wasted spend on non-converters.
  4. Use retargeting — Retargeting CPA is 50-70% lower than cold-traffic CPA. Build retargeting funnels before scaling cold.
  5. Test different ad formats — Video vs image vs carousel vs collection. Different formats have different CPA profiles.
  6. Optimize for the right event — If you optimize for Add to Cart instead of Purchase, you'll get more add-to-carts but higher CPA. Always optimize for Purchase.
  7. Use lookalike audiences — 1% lookalike of your best customers typically has 20-30% lower CPA than interest targeting.

The CPA scaling framework

Once your actual CPA is below your max affordable CPA, you can scale. Actual CPA ≤ Max CPA × 0.5: Strong winner — scale aggressively, increase budget 20% every 2-3 days. Max CPA × 0.5 < Actual CPA ≤ Max CPA × 0.7: Workable winner — scale cautiously, increase budget 15% every 3-4 days. Max CPA × 0.7 < Actual CPA ≤ Max CPA: Marginal — test new creative before scaling. Actual CPA > Max CPA: Losing money — pause campaign, fix creative, targeting, or landing page before resuming.

Common CPA mistakes

The most common mistake is trusting platform-reported CPA without understanding attribution windows. Facebook defaults to 7-day click + 1-day view. If your customers typically buy 10+ days after clicking, Facebook underreports your actual CPA (because it counts fewer conversions). Use a third-party attribution tool (Triple Whale, Northbeam) for accurate cross-platform CPA. The second mistake is not comparing CPA to max affordable CPA — a $30 CPA sounds good, but if your max affordable CPA is $25, you're losing $5 per order. The third mistake is blending CPA across campaigns — your retargeting campaign might have $15 CPA while your cold-traffic campaign has $45 CPA.
